Sure, this murderer’s real identity did not come to fruition, but most of the episode made you believe it was him. “Chapter Thirty-Two’s” ending made it seem Hal was the man behind the mask, and everything about “Shadow of a Doubt” continued to paint that picture, as Betty believed her every intuition. This has mostly faded to the background, unsurprisingly, because it had zero implications on the show, was hardly compelling, and the real Black Hood returned, just as Archie Andrews assumed. The Black Hood was seemingly killed and everyone focused on Hiram’s “big” plan: to build a for-profit prison. Yes, season 2’s focus seemed to be Hiram Lodge after Riverdale returned from its midseason break. “Shadow of a Doubt,” though, might have been the heaviest but best episode of the show this season. There’s just so much to digest each week, with events that impact the show almost every scene. Riverdale embraces how heavy its plot-centric formula is.
